Gangotri - Gomukh - Tapovan - Nandanvan Trek

The picturesque pilgrimage in the hinter lands of the Himalayas is the most sacred spot where Ganges, the stream of life, touched earth for the first time. Gangotri is the second stopover for the Char Dham Yatra.
According to mythology, Goddess Ganga - the daughter of heaven, menifested herself in the form of a river to absolve the sins of King Bhagirath's predecessors, following the severe penance of several centuries, Lord Shiva received Ganga into his matted locks to minimise the immense impact of her fall. She came to be called Bhagirathi at her legendary source.

Along the right bank of Bhagirathi stands the shrine of Gangotri dedicated to the Goddess. preched at the height of 3140 mts.. It was constructed in early 18th century by a Gorkha Commander, Amar Singh Thappa.

Every year, lakhs of pilgrims throng the sacred temple between April and November. By the November end, Gangotri is covered by snow. It is believed that the Goddess retreats to Mukhba, her winter abode (12 km. down stream). The physical source of the holy river is at Gaumukh, 19 kms. further uphill, along the Gangotri Glacier. The trek to Tapovan from Nandanvan after crossing the Gangotri glacier and traversing on a rocky face one arrives at the meadows of Tapovan (meditating ground), a green lush valley in the summers confined by many named and un-named peaks of the Garhwal Himalaya. Herds of Bharal (Blue mountain goats) are a common sight here on mountain ridges.

Gaumukh is where the waters of Ganga trickles down from the glaciers. The sages calledit 'Gaumukh', because in the distance past, probably appeared like a cows mouth: though today, it no longer appears so. From Gangotri you move along the beaten track towards Chirbasa, which is on the treeline. From here you can have clear view of Bhagirathi peaks. Beyond Chirbasa the terrain becomes desolate and barren. Infact it has been reffered to as the Arctic Tundra by many trekkers. From Chirbasa you reach Bhojbasa. Gaumukh Glacier is just 4Kms ahead. From Gaumukh to Tapovan the ascent is steep and as you climb the view of the surrounding peaks is clearer. They appear to be just a stone throw away.
